UNLOCKING THE LINCOLN LETTER: A CONVERSATION ABOUT LINCOLN AND THE CITY OF YONKERS

On Wednesday, June 19, Philipse Manor Hall State Historic Site will hold its first of a series of lunch lectures called Lunches with History. The topic of the first Lunches with History will be Unlocking the Lincoln Letter. In this hour-long conversation, participants will discover one of Philipse Manor Hall’s most unique artifacts—- a letter from Abraham Lincoln to the City of Yonkers. Participants will learn about Lincoln’s involvement and legacy in Yonkers, as well as the rest of the country during the turbulent Civil War period. The lecture begins at 12:00 p.m and ends at 1:00 p.m.

Join us for three guided tours that explore the 18^th century world of Frederick Philipse III. 

Tour 1:  Philipse Manor Hall, 29 Warburton Ave, Yonkers.  Heather Iannucci, Historic Site Manager, will give a tour of the Manor Hall that focuses on the Philipse family, the household they set up in Yonkers, and the improvements they made to the Manor Hall in the late 18^th century. approximately 30 minutes

Tour 2:  Walking tour from PMH to St. John’s.  Nina Wasserman, Education and Programs Associate, will explore the landscape surrounding the Manor Hall using maps and images to understand the area as the Philipses would have known it, while considering the changes that the family made to the land.  approximately 20 minutes 

Tour 3:  St. John’s Church, One Hudson St, Yonkers.   Fr. John Hamilton, Priest at St. John’s Church, will discuss the history of the parish, the Enlightenment Philosophy prevalent at the founding of the church and reflected in its architecture, and describe a service as it would have been on a Sunday morning in the 18^th century.  approximately 30 minutes

A VISIT TO THE VILLAGE OF PHILIPSBURG

            On Saturday, June 8, join the Friends of Philipse Manor Hall for "A Visit to the Village of Philipsburg".  

            In 1751, Frederick Philipse III became Lord of the Manor of Philipsburg, set up his family home at Philipse Manor Hall, and began plans to build a village church.  On Saturday June 8, 2013, visitors to Philipse Manor Hall State Historic Site in Yonkers can travel back in time to the Village of Philipsburg, the heart of the Philipse’s manor.  The event is sponsored by the Friends of Philipse Manor Hall, Philipse Manor Hall State Historic Site, and St. John’s Episcopal Church, and includes guided tours of the Manor Hall, downtown Yonkers, and St. John’s Church. 

            Visitors will gather at the Manor Hall, located at 29 Warburton Ave, for refreshments and a guided tour of the Hall that will bring into focus the daily life of the Philipse family.   The program continues with a walk from the Philipse’s home to their church, while a guide points out historic landmarks, describes the landscape as the Philipses would have found it, and discusses their decision to build St. John’s Episcopal Church.  The visit concludes with a tour of St. John’s, including its colonial history, the many changes it has undergone, and its importance to the colonial village of Philipsburg and to the city of Yonkers. 

            Programs will be offered at 11 am and 2 pm, with refreshments at the Manor Hall for tour participants.  Tours will begin at 11:15 and 2:15 and will last one hour and twenty minutes. Price is $10 for adults, $5 for Friends members and children under 12.  Space is limited to 20 people per tour.  You may purchase tickets on this website using the Paypal link to the right or email us at philipsemanorfriends@gmail.com.
