About Us

Friends of Philipse Manor Hall
The Friends of Philipse Manor Hall was incorporated in 1996 for the support and enhancement of the Philipse Manor Hall State Historic Site in Yonkers, NY. We strive to provide free and inexpensive activities for the diverse population in this community. The FPMH includes residents of Yonkers and surrounding towns, local officials, community organizers, and business owners. Programming is aimed at fostering public interest in and support for the Manor Hall, encouraging visitation, and promoting the site as an asset to the people of the city of Yonkers and the nation. In addition, the FPMH provides funds and volunteers for events organized by the PMH site manager and staff. We feel that cultivating stake-holders from the immediate community as well as the area at large is the best way to secure the future of the site.

The FPMH has completed two major projects and hosted a wide array of events:
In 2000, the original 1750’s papier-mâché Rococo ceiling was restored as an official “Save America’s Treasures” project.
In 2002, conservation of Sailors and Soldiers Monument in front of the manor hall was completed.  Unveiled in 1891, the monument honors the citizens of Yonkers who fought in the Civil War.  The 46 ft tall, granite and cast-bronze monument was cleaned and restored.
Past events have included music and lecture series, after school arts programs, holiday programs and guided tours, book signings, flower festivals, and historic recreations and demonstrations.   In 2008, the FPMH celebrated the 250th wedding anniversary of Mary Philipse and Roger Morris by staging a re-enactment of the wedding, complete with period costumes, decorations, and music.

Philipse Manor Hall
Philipse Manor Hall is one of the oldest historic sites in the United States. The manor house was built in the 1600’s by Frederick Philipse I, a Dutchman who amassed a fortune and eventually became lord of a 52,500-acre estate. The house passed to several owners, undergoing additions and changes, and in 1868 was used as the first city hall for the City of Yonkers. Since 1911, Philipse Manor Hall has been open as a museum of art and history and is home to the Cochran Collection of American portraiture. It is located in downtown Yonkers, an area that is undergoing enormous change, including restoration of turn-of-the century store fronts, and the uncovering of the Saw Mill River across the street from the manor hall. In recent years, the hall has concentrated in the areas of education and curriculum development, establishing valuable partnerships with the Yonkers Board of Education and other community groups. We offer self-guided house tours, public programming, and educational opportunities. We are open to the public and available for research queries. Come visit soon!
