VINNIE BAGWELL AND FRIENDS OF PHILIPSE MANOR HALL PRESENT

ENSLAVED AFRICANS' RAIN GARDEN EXHIBITION

Local sculptor Vinnie Bagwell has proposed an extensive public-art project that will commemorate the enslaved Africans who resided at Philipse Manor Hall in Yonkers–six of whom were among the first to be manumitted by law in the United States, 76 years before the Emancipation Proclamation. This exhibition in the Community Art Gallery of Philipse Manor Hall will feature five maquettes of the planned life-sized sculptures and will include historical information pertaining to slavery in Westchester.  The exhibit is designed to introduce the public to the Enslaved Africans’ Rain Garden concept.  

Admission to the Community Gallery is Free.

A Photographic Exhibition

of Yonkers 

in the Victorian Era

View over 40 images of historic Yonkers, dating from 1860 through the end of the Victorian Era.  This unique exhibit, designed by local historian Bob Piwinski, includes Yonkers streetscapes, train Stations, and the mansions of North Broadway, Warburton Avenue and  Park Hill.  It also includes one of the few known images of the Hendrick Hudson Hotel, designed by architect Bruce Price who also designed the Chateau Frontenac in Quebec. Dubbed “fireproof”, the Hendrick Hudson Hotel burnt to the ground just before it opened in 1901.

OBJECTS AND MEMORY

a lecture by filmmaker Jonathan Fein

In collaboration with the New York Council for the Humanities, Philipse Manor Hall State Historic Site and Friends of Philipse Manor Hall present the lecture, “Objects and Memory,” by filmmaker Jonathan Fein on Tuesday, April 22 at 7 p.m. at Philipse Manor Hall. This lecture is free and open to the general public. This event is made possible through the Speakers in the Humanities program with the support of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Jonathan Fein is a filmmaker and sculptor interested in the interrelationships of the intangible and the physical. In this lecture, Fein asks: what are the things in our homes and museums that mean the most to us? How do we preserve the past and speak to the future? To answer these questions, he focuses on objects and what they reveal about issues of value, memory, contemporary history, museum collecting, and more. Using excerpts from the documentary film "Objects and Memory," this entertaining, stimulating lecture challenges the audience to think about what is taken for granted and what we hold most dear.

AMONG PATRIOTS AND PERSIANS

     This March, Philipse Manor Hall is excited to present, Among Patriots and Persians: Exploring the Collections of Alexander Smith Cochran, a unique program that provides visitors with an in-depth look at the Cochran collections at Philipse Manor Hall and at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.  For Philipse Manor Hall, Cochran acquired portraits of presidents, statesmen, military leaders, artists, and educators with the goal of making the Manor Hall a place of “patriotic interest.” At the Met, he was instrumental in the creation of the museum’s Islamic art collection and donated twenty-four Persian manuscripts, thirty single-page paintings, and one bookbinding.

     Through two unique, docent-led tours, this program will explore Cochran’s diverse interests and his role at the museums.  Part 1 is a tour of Philipse Manor Hall’s Cochran Collection of American Portraiture – participants can choose between  Wednesday, March 19 at 10:30 a.m. and Wednesday, March 26 at 2 p.m.  Part 2 is a tour of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Islamic Galleries on Wednesday, March 26 at 10:30 a.m.

 
            

Admission for both tours is $35 for members of Friends of Philipse Manor Hall and $40 for non-members. Participants will meet at the Manor Hall for Part 1 and at the Met for Part 2. Transportation is not included.
