Passivhaus Design

 and Historic Architecture

Today, historic preservation sits at the forefront of cities’ sustainability initiatives. In most cases, it is more environmentally friendly to renovate an old building than to construct a new one. In historic neighborhoods, such as downtown Yonkers, developers seek ways to reuse the rich history and facades of older structures while updating them to accommodate current standards of living and uses.

 German architect Kay Künzel will address issues of adaptive reuse and sustainable design. In his lecture, “Reinventing Buildings: Passivhaus Design and Historic Architecture,” Künzel will focus on renovations soon to take place at 40 Warburton Avenue, Philipse Manor Hall’s 130-year old neighbor.  Künzel will describe how Passive House design, a five step method of increasing comfort and reducing energy consumption in structures, will be used as the guidelines for reconstruction while maintaining portions of the historic structure.  Kay will discuss:

1.  Embodied Energy in existing building stock 

2.  5 principals of Passivhaus design 

3.  Benefits of Passivhaus design 

4.  Challenges presented renovating historic structures to meet Passivhaus standards 

5.  Examples of Passivhaus construction in Europe

  

Kay Künzel is a lecturer at Danube University, Krems, Austria - Future Building Solutions - International Sustainable Design Master, owner and principal architect at Raum für Architektur, and an expert in Passivhaus design.

 Reinventing Buildings is part of Philipse Manor Hall’s series, Preserving Our Past. From March to May 2014, Philipse Manor Hall will host a series of lectures, movies, and conversations to engage the public in thinking about historic preservation, including its role in communities, whom it serves, and what it achieves.

A Photographic Exhibition

of Yonkers 

in the Victorian Era

Visit Philipse Manor on Saturday, March 1, 2014 from 12 Noon - 2:00 PM and view over 40 images of historic Yonkers from 1860 through the end of the Victorian Era.

The exhibit includes Yonkers street scapes, Train Stations, and the Mansions of North Broadway, Warburton Avenue and  Park Hill.  It also includes one of the only known images of the Hendrick Hudson Hotel, designed by architect Bruce Price who also designed the Chateau Frontenac in Quebec. Dubbed “fireproof”, the Hendrick Hudson Hotel burnt to the ground just before it opened in 1901.

Local historian Bob Piwinski* will be on site to talk about this exhibition and answer questions.  The event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served.

Celebrate Presidents' Day at the Manor Hall!

Saturday, February 15, 12 -4 pm  

Presidents George Washington and Franklin Delano Roosevelt both visited Philipse Manor Hall, and this Presidents’ Day you can do the same!

Philipse Manor Hall State Historic Site will hold its annual Presidents’ Day celebration on Saturday, February 15, 2014 at Philipse Manor Hall, from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.

            The program will include a presidential quiz, scavenger hunt, mock election, and hourly storytimes.  Celebrate Abraham Lincoln’s 205^th Birthday with candle making from 12 – 2 pm and a birthday cake at 2 pm. To further commemorate the day, Lincoln will recite The Gettysburg Address at 2:30 and meet visitors later in the afternoon. Throughout the day, visitors will have a chance to make their own set of George Washington’s famous false teeth and draw portraits of presidents like the ones hanging in the museum.

Join us Wednesday, February 5, at 10:30 am for Storytime!  Children ages 3 1/2  to 5 (accompanied by caregiver) will enjoy stories, songs, and activities.  This month's theme is First People, and will explore the history of the Lenape people.  Free admission.
